The sample project pictured in the magazine was made with the beautiful silver gray Loops & Threads Woolike sold by Michaels Craft Stores shown above. It’s a great yarn and I am smitten!
Woolike is a Category 1 weight yarn. This Super Fine weight is also called Fingering or Sock weight or 2 or 3 ply for our UK and Australia friends.
Just about any soft Category 1 yarn could be substituted. I made a previous version in Red Heart Heart & Sole sock yarn. And I’m making another one in Red Heart It’s a Wrap pictured at the bottom of this post. Each yarn has it’s own bit of ‘personality’, so even though it’s the same design they all look a bit different!
I love the site YarnSub.com- there’s some alternates they suggest on this page here: https://yarnsub.com/yarns/loops_and_threads/woolike and even more on this one: https://yarnsub.com/search?q=fingering
Size 5 crochet thread might also be used, although I have not tried it- you would definitely need to make the Sample Swatch and measure carefully.
Also, I have not tested this theory, but I am willing to bet that a soft Category 2 (Baby or Sport weight) yarn could also be used successfully for larger sizes. Again, swatching would be necessary!
Tell me about your yarn - what did you get or are thinking of getting? Do you have questions about a certain yarn you have in mind?
